Other Jubilants

In 2010, a variety of Trondheims knowledge institutions celebrate their round numbers. First, the celebration of Norway's oldest scientific institution, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences founded in 1760. The company's descendants today falls into three main parts: DKNVS still is Norway's oldest, independent, scientific society, and the two institutions: The library (now a central part of the University Library in Trondheim) and the museum which now corresponds to the Science Museum. The latter two are now part of the NTNU.

The other key institution is the Norwegian Institute of Technology, NTH, which is 100 years old in 2010. The main building on Gløshaugen has in many ways characterized the city throughout the 1900s. NTH became in 1996 a part of the core of NTNU. NTH was the first academic educational institution for technologists in Norway.

In addition Sintef celebrates 60 years anniversary, closely linked in the NTNU and DKNVS.

Samfundet and Trondheim

In Trondheim about one out of every sixth inhabitant is a student. Trondheim had in 2008 165,191 registered inhabitants in Trondheim municipality. In addition, there are at any given time about 30,000 students with a permanent or temporary residential address in Trondheim. This population segment is important for economic and cultural life in the city, and not least for its identity; students adds new thoughts, vitality, labor and cultural engagement, and helps to lift Trondheim as the No. 1 knowledge city of Norway.

The Student Society is a natural gathering place for nearly a third of the students in Trondheim, at the end of 2007 there were registered 9557 members of the Society. The role the house has in the construction of Trondheim's identity as the country's premier student city can not be overstated, both through its daily operations and through the many long traditions associated with UKA - the economic pillar the Student Society stands on.

ISFiT - International Student Festival in Trondheim - is another player who draws attention to our city. In 1990 the first festival were held, and it is 20 years in 2010. ISFiT has previously been visited by international opinion carriers such as the Dalai Lama, José Ramos-Horta, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Wangari Maathai.
