How to install an alternate OS on the I-opener, using a pc with Windows:
You will need the following:
An I-opener (obviously)
A size 8 (T8) torx screwdriver
A 44-pin IDE cable with pins reversed
A 2.5" IDE Hard Drive
A 44 to 40 pin IDE converter
A PC running Windows or DOS
A full-size keyboard for the I-opener
A v2 SanDisk image
A copy of dolly
Open your I-opener using the torx screwdriver and a regular flat
screwdriver. Remove the heatsink to reveal the IDE connector. Connect your
IDE cable, and reattach the heatsink. Also connect the full size
keyboard.
Download dolly and the v2 image from the links above. Unzip them both to
the same directory, and rename the v2 image to
v2image.bin
.
Shut down.
Using your 40 to 44 pin IDE converter, attach your 2.5" drive to your
stationary PC. Boot up the PC, and make sure the BIOS recognizes the hard
drive correctly. Boot up in pure DOS mode (using F8 in win 95, Ctrl key
in win 98). First, test the surface area of the drive using Scandisk.
Then use Fdisk, and remove all existing partitions from the
2.5" drive. Reboot, this time also in pure DOS mode, and cd to the
directory with dolly and the image.
Assuming your system usually has only one IDE HD, type:
dolly v2_image.bin hd129:
(If your system has more than one IDE drive, see the manual for dolly)
Connect the 2.5" to the I-opener, and turn on. Press TAB several times to
reveal the BIOS information. Make sure the BIOS detects your drive as
primary slave, and that the SunDisk is not detected. If this is not the
case, turn off the I-opener and change the jumper setting on the hard
drive before you power up again. Once the BIOS only has detected your hard
drive correctly, press ctrl-alt-esc on the keyboard to enter the BIOS.
In the first menu, change the primary master IDE drive to NONE, and the
primary slave to USER. For the USER drive, manually set 490 cylinders, 2
heads, 32 sectors. In the next menu, set the boot order to D, A, SCSI.
Save the settings and reboot.
When the I-opener now boots (from the disk), you should have a different
tutorial, with a male voice. By pressing TAB-4444, you will get a root
prompt. Type /app/stop-apps
, you will get a login prompt.
Login as root
,
and use osiw$6.4
as password. Change directory to
/app/ztest
.
Now, to flash the BIOS, type
./qnxflash -w bios_image_256k.bin
If you get *any* error messages from the flash, try again. Otherwise, wait
a few seconds and pull the plug. When rebooting, you should now get a new
boot picture, with the "nothing but net" logo. If so, your I-opener will
now function like any pc, accepting any hard drives a normal pc would.
