Tuesday screening: Female Trouble (1974)

John Waters' Female Trouble (1974) is a burlesque and provocative cult film that blends glam grotesque with a satirical take on crime and celebrity worship.

Female Trouble is an American cult film from 1974, written, directed, and produced by John Waters. The film is known for its grotesque humor, over-the-top style, and deliberate transgressions, a trademark of Waters’ early work. It also features one of the most iconic roles of drag legend Divine, who plays the lead character Dawn Davenport.
The story follows Dawn, a rebellious teenager who runs away from home after not receiving the Christmas present she wanted, and who then embarks on a series of criminal and absurd acts. Eventually, she becomes involved with an eccentric couple who believe that “crime is beauty,” leading her through a dramatic transformation into a violent, fame obsessed figure.
Female Trouble is both a satire of American celebrity obsession and a parody of melodrama. With its low budget, amateur actors, and explicit scenes, the film stands as a clear example of Waters’ uncompromising style and his determination to challenge social norms securing its place in the history of American cult cinema.
