Sunday screening: Force Majeure (2014)
A Sámi western inspired by an ancient legend from the 13th century.
Pathfinder follows the young North Sámi Aigin as he travels across the Finnmarksvidda after a hunting expedition in the mountains. However, Finnmarksvidda during the Viking Age is far from peaceful wilderness. Aigin witnesses the brutal murder of his family by the Tsjudes—rival nomads on a raiding expedition. He attempts to escape, but the Tsjudes capture him and force him to serve as their guide.
Pathfinder is a suspenseful action and adventure drama. Directed and written by Nils Gaup, and based on a nearly 1,000-year-old legend, the film foregrounds Sámi ways of life, belief systems, philosophy, and the natural environment. It was the first film produced by Sámi filmmakers and received significant national and international recognition, including Amanda Awards and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
