Planetariumviewing: The Devils (1981)
Ken Russell’s psychosexual witch-hunt drama, which has been described as a “grand fiesta for sadists and perverts,” will be shown on the big screen in the main hall.
The Devils is a sick, psychedelic experience that tells the story of the real priests and witch hunters of Renaissance France. The popular priest Urbain Grandier—who may not live a life a Catholic monk should be proud of—becomes entangled in a psychosexual witch hunt after his past transgressions are brought to light. Ken Russell, a master of intense and psychedelic filmmaking, captures the essence of religious shame and madness, and shows how far people are willing to go when they believe ethics are on their side.
Released in 1971, the film was immediately hated by most “respectable” critical media, as it is a film that:
1. Criticizes the Vatican
Is wildly sexual and naked
Is made by Ken Russell
The film was heavily censored upon its initial release, and several scenes were missing when it was shown in cinemas. Most notably, the “Rape of Christ” scene was absent. At Samfundet, the film will be shown in its entirety.
