Docutuesday: Exit Through the Giftshop (2010)

“Life is like a game of chess. I don’t know how to play chess.”

This wild documentary is put together from video footage shot by the Frenchman Thierry Guetta while he followed street artists on their nightly missions. He had one goal: to find the legend Banksy. He succeeds, and Banksy allows Thierry to shadow him under the assumption that Thierry is making a documentary about him as an artist. But when the documentary is never completed, Banksy begins to sense that there is something strange about Thierry.

The documentary that was meant to be about Banksy, filmed by Thierry, takes a complete turn and ends up with Banksy making a documentary about Thierry Guetta — or Mr. Brainwash, as he eventually proclaims himself to be. This is a film that will blow any viewer away and plunge us all into an artistic existential crisis: what is art, and who can be an artist?

Many have speculated whether this is a mockumentary. Banksy himself has stated that the film is truthful, except for the parts that are not, while Thierry has said that he is not only an artist thanks to Banksy, but that he also became Banksy’s “greatest work of art.”
