Sunday screening: Ikiru (1952)
“Ikiru” simply means “to live.”
Kurosawa said: "Sometimes I think about dying. It makes me restless. Just imagine taking my last breath after living a life like this. There is so much left for me to accomplish while I am still alive. I feel that I have lived far too little. This feeling makes my heart ache. In the film Ikiru, I have tried to portray that feeling". Kenji Watanabe is a section chief in the Japanese bureaucracy. He has worked there for 30 years without taking a single day off. Then, one day, he learns that he has cancer and only six months left to live. Ikiru is considered by many to be one of Akira Kurosawa’s greatest films, alongside “Seven Samurai”.
