Excenteraften: Homebrewing
Do you want to learn how to brew your own beer? Then you have to come!
Anders and Brede, former students and current amateur brewers, are coming to Samfundet to tell you how you, too, can become an amateur brewer.
Maybe you have a friend who insists that brewing your own beer is cheaper than buying it at the store, an uncle who has served you a beer with notes of jet fuel and hemp, or a cousin who gave you a supposedly-beer from a plastic container? Maybe you’re wondering how that uncle managed to concoct something so absolutely disgusting when beer is otherwise so delicious?
You’ll get answers to these questions and more (or less) during the talk. Whether you know exactly what a mash, cold crash, and racking vessel are, or you think hops are an insect rather than a flower, we have something for you!
During the talk, we’ll cover the following three topics:
1) The history of homebrewing in Norway
Did you know, for example, that Norway has its own strain of yeast that breaks all the rules of brewing? Or that, during the Middle Ages, you could be sent into exile for not brewing enough beer for Christmas?
2) How expensive is it to brew?
What equipment do you actually need to get started, what’s nice to have, and what shortcuts can you take? And which shortcuts are more trouble than they’re worth?
3) The Gløshaugen student wonders: what actually happens inside the bucket to turn what is essentially a grain tea into beer?
We’ll take a look at the chemistry behind brewing, what gives beer its flavours — and off-flavours — and why brewing involves so much cleaning and sanitising… unless you’re Belgian, that is.
