The Wednesday Debate: Women and Peace?

Are women better than men to at making peace? According to UN peace agreements ar 35% more likely to last for 15 years if women are involved in the process. Why then are women so underrepresented in peace processes around the world?

16 years ago the UN adopted resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. The resolution recognizes the important role women can, and should, play in peace processes and conflict prevention. What is done to strengthen the role of women in peace processes, and how can this be improved? What has happened in 16 years? How critical is it to have women in decision-making bodies?

To discuss this we have invited Gry Larsen and Marianne Gulli. Gry Larsen is Secretary General of the aid organization CARE Norway. Previously she ha been a politician in the Labour Party, was political adviser to Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre from 2005, and from 2009 to 2013 she sat as Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry. Gulli is program advisor at FOKUS Forum for women and development. Previously she was Chairman for the Latin American Groups in Norway (LAG). She has several years experience from Guatemala and Central America, where her work focused on women and indigenous people’s rights. She is a political scientist with a masters degree from FLASCO Guatemala, and her expertise lies with social movements, rights struggle and democratization.

This is WEDNESDAY DEBATE: an evening where you have the opportunity to stop by Samfundet just to relax with some good, old-fashioned exchange of opinion. We want to invite to discussion, politics and debate - with Samfundet and the society as back drop.

This debate will be held in Norwegian.

Events at the Student Society can be adapted for visitors with movement and hearing impairment. See here for more information.
