Sunday Film: Short Term 12

A charming movie about interpersonal relationships and the art of following your own advice.

Short Term 12 is Destin Daniel Cretton's award-winning film from 2013, based on his short film from 2008 with the same title. We follow Grace (Brie Larson) who has dedicated her life to helping children and youth who have fallen outside the community. Just like the children in her rehabilitation home, Grace carries painful memories from her own past. When a new girl who has switched between different rehabilitation homes through most of her childhood arrives at Short Term 12, Grace relives her own past through her. Grace is confronted by her own advice that she gives the children. Will she finally open up and talk about her past or will she distance herself from having a close relationship to those she loves?

Short Term 12 is a warm movie that portrays the relationship between children and staff in a realistic and positive way. We get insight into what it means to be children who do not belong in society and how the relationship between them and the staff affects them for good and bad. Short Term 12 is simply a down to earth and nice story.
