Tuesday Film: Kind Hearts and Coronets

This is the movie where Obi Wan Kenobi plays eight roles, and this alone is reason enough to see it.

Kind Hearts and Coronets is about a man who is far behind in line of succession to the title Duke of D'Ascoyne. To obtain the title he must systematically kill eight relatives, who stands before him in line. The reason for his deeds is, not surprisingly, revenge. His mother belonged really D'Ascoyne family, but because she ran off with an Italian opera singer, she cast out from the family.

When Alec Guiness (Obi Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars movies) recieved the script, he was first offered four parts. After just reading bits (he laughed so much of the first few pages, he could not bear to read the rest), he sent a telegram to the manufacturers where it stood: "'Why four parts? Why not eight !?"

This is the first comedy from the now legendary British production company Ealing Studios, who was behind a number of classic comedies on 40- and 50's, including The Ladykillers. In addition, the 6th place of the 100 best British films through all times.

Production year: 1949

Director: Robert Hamer
