Tuesday screening: Hustruer (1975)
A film about freedom, independence, and the expectations placed on women in the 1970s, portrayed through both humor and seriousness.
Hustruer (1975) is a Norwegian dramedy by Anja Breien, starring Anne Marie Ottersen, Katja Medbøe, and Frøydis Armand. The film follows friends Mie, Kaja, and Heidrun, who, after a ten-year elementary school reunion, decide to escape from their husbands, children, and jobs for a three-day binge in Oslo.
The film challenges the gender roles of the 1970s: What happens when women behave like men, go out on the town, and leave the diaper duty to their husbands? Hustruer is a feminist dramedy that was embraced by both audiences and critics when it premiered during the International Women’s Year in 1975. The film was inspired by John Cassavetes’ Husbands (1970), in which three men decide to go on a three-day binge. Hustruer turned conventional truths about women’s roles in the home and society upside down and has since remained a Norwegian classic.
