Sunday screening: Force Majeure (2014)
"Every Man for Himself! Forget the Wife and Kids"
Force majeure refers to an unforeseen and uncontrollable event. In the legal world, such an event may release a party from fulfilling its contractual obligations. The film Force Majeure (Turist, 2014), directed by Ruben Östlund, explores whether this also applies to interpersonal situations.
In the film, the male protagonist flees from his family during what he believes to be a large and dangerous avalanche. Östlund examines how the family dynamic and the marriage are affected in the aftermath of this event. Can the relationship be salvaged? Is it truly the man’s role to protect his family in a life-threatening situation, or can he be relieved of this responsibility? And how does he cope with his own reaction afterward?
Force Majeure explores the male gender role, while also inviting the viewer to reflect on how they themselves might have acted or reacted in a similar situation.
