Sunday screening: Submarine (2010)
15-year-old Oliver Tate has two goals: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life.
Submarine (2010) is Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut. It’s a charming, melancholic, and funny coming-of-age film about being young, in love, and full of way-too-big thoughts. The film follows the eccentric and self-important teenager Oliver Tate as he tries to navigate love, identity, and his parents’ crumbling relationship. He believes his entire life is being decided right there and then, and his solutions are often clumsy and driven by intense desperation.
The film has a style all of its own: dry british humor, beautiful visual aesthetics, and a BANGING soundtrack by Alex Turner. Submarine is both touching and funny, and can even take the viewer straight back to what it felt like to be young… or maybe you still see a bit of yourself in Oliver Tate.
