UNDRESSED - The absurd history of female sexuality
Doctor and author Nina Brochmann undresses a male-dominated medical field and how it has contributed to discipline women's life and desire.
Throughout history, women have been categorized and diagnosed as hysterical, frigid, indecent, and nymphal. And the reason? A society that seeks to restrain and control women’s sexuality, according to physician and author Nina Brochmann. In her recent book Avkledd (Undressed), it is not the woman who is stripped bare, but a male-dominated medical history that is exposed and laid bare, as she examines everything from wandering organs to hymens.
Nina Brochmann is known for titles such as Gleden med skjeden (The Wonder Down Under: A User's Guide to the Vagina, Jenteboka (The Girl Book: Nina and Ellen's guide to puberty), and Gutteboka (The Boy Book: Your Guide to Puberty), written together with fellow physician and author Ellen Støkken Dahl. She now comes to Samfundet to take us into both the dark and absurd corners of medical history, and to show how it has contributed to the control of women’s lives. And what is the current state of women’s sex lives today?
