Sundayscreening: Fokus Palestina | With Abu Jamal (2019) & The Tower (2018)
The Student Society's Film Club invites to a filmevening about Palestine with an introduction from the Palestinia Committee in Trondheim.
The State of Israel was established on the 15th of May 1948, despite massive protests from the Palestinians already residing on the land. Big parts of the palestinian population were displaced from their homes and over 500 palestinian villages were destroyed. The Palestinians call the 1948-war “al-Nakba”, meaning “the catastrophy”.
Today Israel occupies palestinian areas in violation of international law and engages in settler colonialism. The Palestinians on the Gaza Strip live under an ongoing blockade and lack food, water, and emergency aid. Simultaneously, the Palestinian on the West Bank live under occupation, surrounded by colonies, military zones and controlposts.
About the movies:
In Siri Nerbø’s “With Abu Jamal” we meet Abu Jamal in the shop he has run for over 60 years in Ramallah on the West Bank. She films him in his element where he sells cigarettes and sweets, and depicts everyday life under occupation in Ramallah.
She wants to film him in the shop where he sells cigarettes and sweets. Despite the fact that language is a barrier, a friendship develops between them. The camera’s presence builds bridges and also shows how the occupation has an increasingly destructive effect on both Abu Jamal’s life and business after almost 60 years of continuous operation.
“The Tower” follows the eleven-year-old Palestinian Wardi, who grows up in a Lebanese refugee camp. She lives with her great-grandfather Sidi and the rest of her family in a high tower. Ever since Sidi arrived at the refugee camp in 1948, he has kept on hoping that he might one day return home to Palestine. The film is a journey through the past of four generations of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, and provides a generational perspective on the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel.
“The Tower” is based on interviews, conversations and observations made by director and screenwriter, Mats Grorud, while he lived in a refugee camp in Beirut.
