Sundayscreening: Fucktoys (2025)

Annapurna Sriram’s remarkable debut film unfolds as a surreal odyssey, with an aesthetic and irreverence that may evoke filmmakers like John Waters and Gregg Araki. The protagonist, AP, a sex worker, learns that she has been cursed and that the only way to break it is by sacrificing a lamb—for the modest sum of $1,000. She sets out on a wild moped ride through the city of Trashtown in an attempt to lift the curse.
Shot on Super 16mm, Fucktoys takes on a grainy, analog texture that makes its aesthetic anything but polished. Combined with a production design composed of tarot cards, neon lights, and plastic relics, there is hardly a single dull image in this cinematic treat. The gritty yet seductive and playful cinematography offers an unexpected visual beauty, where the grotesque and the aesthetically alluring coexist.
