Planetariumviewing: Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)
“I told him I had a rifle and that he'd only make it as far as the first bend before he had eight bullets in his head — the ninth one would be for me”
This is a film with a behind-the-scenes story just as gripping as the narrative within the film itself. Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God is loosely based on the journey of Lope de Aguirre and his conquistadors through South America in search of the golden city of El Dorado. All filming took place in actual rainforests, a fact clearly evident in the vast, beautiful shots featured throughout the movie.
The film's production is notorious for the drama between Werner Herzog and lead actor Klaus Kinski, which involved threats with real guns (as per the quote above), the firing of live rifles, and local indigenous people offering to "eliminate" Kinski for Herzog. This was the first of five films Herzog and Kinski made together.
