We seemingly have better living conditions than our ancestors, but are we actually better off than before?
In recent years, social media has focused heavily on what you can do to best support your own psychological and mental well-being—on being strong and courageous, but perhaps most of all, on being content in your own company and not dependent on others. While this has led to many positive outcomes, has it gone too far? We are living in an era where everything is expected to be optimized, maximized, and improved. Many people feel quite numb under the weight of what is expected of a life; you are supposed to achieve so much, fulfill so many roles, and get so much done. In the process, have we perhaps lost sight of the importance of community? Do we truly grasp the significance of having one another? What happens to us if we each live on our own little island? While our living conditions may appear superior to those of our ancestors, are we actually better off than before?
