Samfundsmøte: Modis India
India is one of the world's most diverse and multiethnic countries. When you think of India, you might think of Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, and that’s perhaps not surprising, as we generally hear little about India in the media. But did you know that India is referred to as the world's largest democracy? That India has surpassed China in population? And that the country has been governed by the same party and prime minister since 2014?
This event will be held in Norwegian.
On June 4th of this year, the populist known as "India's Trump," Narendra Modi, was declared the winner of the election for the third time in a row. This happened despite accusations of censoring critics and the opposition, spreading fake news, and anti-Muslim rhetoric.
In recent years, the country has experienced tremendous growth, both economically and in terms of population, and is on track to become the world's third-largest economy by 2030. So, why don’t we talk more about India? Who exactly is Narendra Modi and the Hindu nationalist party BJP?
On Saturday, September 7th, we invite you to a deep dive into Indian politics, where we will cover everything from social inequality, the rise of Hindu nationalism and anti-Muslim rhetoric, to a democracy, religious freedom, and freedom of speech under pressure. What exactly is stirring within the world’s most populous country?
To answer this, our panel includes Professor Emeritus of Economics and India enthusiast, Karl “Kalle” Moene, as well as author, entrepreneur, India commentator, and former ISFiT president, Rina Sunder.
Doors open at 17:45. Entrance through the main entrance. The event is free for members, and 50 NOK for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The meeting will be streamed on Samfundet’s YouTube channel and will also be uploaded in its entirety on the YouTube channel afterward.
