Samfundsmøte: Norway's arms exports

Norwegian arms industry and exports - of war and peace.

In 2013, Norway exported weapons and ammunition for approximately 2,1 billion NOK. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) Norway is the 18th largest weapon exporters in the World.

The public have different opinions on the subject. Some argue that weapon and ammunition export is unethical, and that the regulations set by the government doesn't limit the export like it's supposed to, and so Norwegian weapons are used in warfare. The main counterargument is that Norwegian weapon export is justified by how Norwegian industries in general are too small to keep our head over water when we run out of oil, and the weapon-industry might be where we should put our money and research.

Author Tove Lie has written a book on the subject, in which she addresses exactly how Norwegian weapons and ammunition finds it's way to battlefields where they shouldn't be found.

We will also have Member of Parliament and of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Christian Tybring Gjedde, in Storsalen this Saturday to talk about the politics and advantages of the Norwegian weapon-industry.
